Helen Hazel Hoover was a woman of strong faith, a loving heart, and a spirit that could brighten any room. She believed in looking at the positive rather than the negative, meeting life with determination, and making the most of every opportunity to love, laugh, serve, and encourage others. Family was at the center of her world, and her faith in the Lord guided her throughout a life filled with meaningful friendships, cherished memories, and a legacy of love.
Helen passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at Good Shepherd Home in Ashland, Ohio. She was 89 years old.
Born June 23, 1937, in Crestline, Ohio, Helen was the daughter of Robert William Earick and Ruth Ivale Marshman. She graduated from Ontario High School in 1955 and began her working career at Power Equipment in Accounting, BorgWarner in purchasing. She later found her professional home at Sprint Telephone Company, where she enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a purchasing agent before retiring.
One of Helen’s greatest blessings was sharing 73 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Weston Franklin “Frank” Hoover. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and friendship.
Whether traveling with church friends, visiting new places, or cheering on family members at sporting events, Helen and Frank treasured the time they spent together. Their enduring partnership was a beautiful example of commitment and devotion.
Helen’s faith was never simply something she practiced on Sunday mornings; it was woven into the way she lived and loved. She and Frank were longtime, active members of Church of God, now Avenue Church. Helen gave generously of her time, especially in working with the youth group. She and Frank traveled with the young people, building relationships and creating memories that would last long after those trips ended. She also welcomed Sunday mornings with the simple pleasure of hosting coffee and doughnuts, making church a place of fellowship
and friendship.
A dedicated servant of her church, Helen served as chairman of the Singing Christmas Tree, helping bring the beauty and message of the Christmas season to life for the congregation and community. She was also a member of Christian Business Women, where she shared fellowship with others who valued faith and service. Helen’s example of living out her beliefs lefta lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her.
Creativity was another of Helen’s many gifts. She enjoyed crafts and artwork, including embroidery, coloring, and painting. She took pride in her creations, many of which found their way to decorate Mansfield Care Center, bringing color and cheer to others. Whether working on a new project or adding a personal touch to something special, Helen found joy in making things beautiful and sharing that joy with those around her.
Above all, Helen was devoted to her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-
grandchildren held a special place in her heart. She loved being part of their lives, celebrating their accomplishments, supporting their activities, and showing up whenever she could. Family gatherings and shared experiences meant the world to her, and she made sure those she loved knew they could count on her.
Helen was strong-willed and determined, a fighter who did not back down when life presented challenges. She was also kind, generous, outgoing, and friendly, with a spunky personality and a lovable spirit. A natural conversationalist, she could make others feel welcome and draw them into a conversation. She was free-spirited and inspirational, approaching life with courage and an encouraging outlook. Even when circumstances were difficult, Helen had a way of finding the bright side and reminding others to do the same.
Helen leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond the years she lived. It lives on in the faith she shared, the family she cherished, the young people she encouraged, the friendships she nurtured, and the beauty she created with her hands. Her life was a reminder that kindness matters, faith gives strength, and a positive spirit can make a difference in the lives of others.
Helen is survived by her loving husband Frank, daughter Teresa Kim Herndon, grandchildren Colin Herndon, Nicole and Steven Horning, and Kyle Herndon; great grandchildren Oliver and Weston Horning, a brother Robert “Bob” and Rebecca Earick, along with nephews and extended family.
