FREDERICKTOWN — The Fredericktown boys basketball team took a bit of a victory lap on Friday night, and the community reveled in the affair.
The Freddies, who already clinched the Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference title outright, rolled over rival Centerburg 49-38 on Friday night and then cut down the nets in front of a home crowd.
“I think this is extra special for the kids,” coach Derek Dibling said. “This is something they worked for a long time all summer, put a lot of hours into it.
“I’m just excited for this group of kids and for the community to be here to kind of soak it up. The student section was fantastic. The fans were great. It’s a community achievement.”
Fredericktown senior Teegan Ruhl lead the Freddies with 17 points, while senior Kaid Carpenter added 14 points and senior Brady Lester chipped in with 11.
“It was great,” Ruhl said. “We just got the ball moving really well. There were times where it didn’t move very well and we had to emphasize the ball movement.”
Once the flow was found, Ruhl said the team found its spark.
“We just needed energy,” the senior said. “We knew it was gonna be a dog fight and we just had to get that spark going.”
Fredericktown improved to 14-6 overall, 12-0 in the KMAC. The Freddies will play at Columbus Academy on Tuesday.
Centerburg fell to 13-6, 9-3, and will host North Union on Tuesday.
