SHELBY — We ACT, City of Shelby Mayor Steve Schag and the Richland County Sheriff’s Office would like to invite the public to the Spread the Light kick-off on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, at 5 p.m. at Rocket Chevrolet, 233 Mansfield Ave. (Route 39), Shelby.

“In addition to blue lights, we are adding red light bulbs to honor Firefighters, EMS and first responders,” organizers stated in a press release. “The Spread the Light kick-off will feature music, speakers, and refreshments. And of course, free blue and red-light bulbs.”

Special guests include Ohio Senator Mark Romanchuk, State Representative Marilyn John, and Miss Ohio Lora Current.

“Spread the Light 2022” is a blue/red light week to promote Pride in our local safety forces, Partnership in all communities of Richland County and Peace in our neighborhoods.

Please help “Spread the Light” by putting a blue or red-light bulb on your porch or business during the week of Jan. 10 to 15, 2022, to show support for the men and women who protect and serve the citizens of Richland County through public service.

Richland County “Spread the Light” began in 2016 and is a localized approach to Project Blue Light which originated in 1988 in Philadelphia when a relative of a fallen police officer placed a memorial blue light in a window along with other seasonal decorations.

Its intent was to show others that they are not alone in their loss and to remember the officer who died. The concept has caught on nationwide.

In 2020, We ACT added red-light bulbs to this local initiative to include firefighters, EMS and first responders who also sacrifice and have given their lives for the greater good.

Free blue and red-light bulbs will be available at Rocket Chevrolet and blue light bulbs will be available at the Richland County Sheriff’s Office on a first-come, first-served basis.
