The American Heart Association, the Center for Disease Control, and the American College of Sports Medicine all agree that adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week to maintain good health.  However, the American Heart Association reports that only about one in five adults and teens get the recommended amount of exercise each week.

What about you? Are you getting the recommended amount of exercise to maintain good health? The benefits of exercise are a big deal. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Reduces the risk of many diseases such as: heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and several types of cancers

  • Can help lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and help manage blood sugar levels for those who already have diabetes

  • Improves energy levels and stamina

  • Improves sleep and cognition (better memory, attention and ability to process information)

  • Helps strengthen bones, improve balance, and reduces the risk of injuries caused by falls

  • Helps manage weight, reduce obesity and the health conditions associated with it

  • Improves symptoms of depression and anxiety

  • Reduces and/or helps manage stress

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Moderate intensity exercise raise the heart rate and keep it elevated for a period of time. It’s exercise that is challenging and makes us slightly out of breath but doesn’t cause us to gasp for air.

  • Start where you can (10 minutes a few times a week is a fine place to start if you haven’t been exercising) and then add gradually. Breaking up exercise segments throughout the day is acceptable for achieving health benefits.

  • You can choose from a variety of activities to find something you enjoy (walking, hiking, dancing, swimming, aerobics classes, etc.)
