MANSFIELD — James “Jimmy” Papas, a fixture of the local business community and owner of the Mansfield Family Restaurant, has been officially commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel.
The commission, which represents one of the highest honors awarded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, recognizes Papas’ lifetime of service, leadership, and hospitality.
Papas was surprised with the formal commission certificate on Saturday, Sept. 5, during a presentation conducted at his 1090 Park Avenue West restaurant. The ceremony took place in front of a packed house of loyal customers, dedicated staff, and close friends and family members.
He was nominated for the honor by a fellow Kentucky Colonel Caid McKinley.
“I have known Jimmy for several years and eat at his wonderful restaurant at least once a week,” McKinley told Richland Source. “Jimmy is truly a remarkable personal and much deserving of such a high honor.”
Papas’ journey is the absolute definition of the American Dream. He immigrated to the United States from Greece in 1966 as a 17-year-old, unable to speak a word of English.
Through sheer grit, determination, and hard work, he mastered the language and built a thriving entrepreneurial legacy.
Over the decades, Papas has owned several successful businesses, culminating in his stewardship of the Mansfield Family Restaurant, a beloved local institution that has served as the heartbeat of the Mansfield community for over 50 years.
“To come to this country with nothing but a dream, and to now be recognized with such a historic honor, is deeply humbling,” Papas said. “This restaurant and this community have been my life’s work.
“Sharing this moment right here, surrounded by the staff, customers, friends and family who made it all possible, means everything to me.”
While a Kentucky Colonel commission is often granted to citizens who impact the culture of Kentucky, it is also frequently bestowed upon non-residents who perform significant, lifelong acts of service for their local community, state, or nation.
By receiving this lifetime appointment from the Governor of Kentucky, Papas officially steps into the role of a global goodwill ambassador for the Commonwealth.
