Of all the views you might look for on the Square in order to compare the streetscapes of today with those of 100 years ago, the one on the eastern end of North Park Street is probably the most changed.

A major fire in the 1940s took out the buildings on the left side of the picture, and construction of the Municipal Building in the 1970s eliminated those directly in front.

While these changes definitely incurred loss of some interesting architecture for the downtown streetscape, it also added a dimension of scope and scale that fairly befits the setting of a center of government.
