Buford Henry “Buck” Holt, 92, of Loudonville peacefully passed away from us on Monday morning, Feb. 13, 2017 in Smithville-Western Care Center, Wooster.
He bore Parkinson’s Disease with courage and good nature for almost 30 years until the Lord released him from it. He was born Sept. 27, 1924 in Cornelia, Georgia to the late Albert Neville Holt and Elizabeth Culver.
Known to his family and friends as Buck, he was a hard worker from earliest childhood. His first job was delivering milk from a horse-drawn wagon which instilled a love for driving. That early experience developed into a 50-year career of long-haul trucking, an occupation that began as “something fun” and became a profession in which he had great pride.
After driving literally millions of miles, Buck and Doris enjoyed their retirement in Greenville, South Carolina, where he became an expert in antique furniture restoration and decorative caning. Notably, he was an accomplished designer and builder of complex and beautiful stained glass windows.
In 2004, he and Doris moved to Loudonville to be near family and became a much-loved figure of central Loudonvillle. Parkinson’s Disease had put a cruel end to his manual dexterity but he learned to delight his neighbors with country western music played (loudly) on his CD player from the front porch of their home. Once a trucker, always a trucker …
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 67 years, Doris Ann Taylor Holt; his faithful son, Donald (Dr. Roxanne Baumgartner) Holt, of Loudonville; two daughters: Delores (Charles) Roof, of Bourbonnais, Illinois, and Betty Carol Rousseau, of Prescott, Arizona; a daughter-in-law: Mary Glen Allison, of Houston, Texas; six cherished grandchildren: Craig (Jean) Allison, of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Jason Allison, of Houston, Texas, Rev. Joe (Kim) Roof, of Schenectady, New York, Shawna (Kevin) Alderman, of Mechanicville, New York, Sandra Roof, of Bradley, Illinois, Kendra Rousseau, of Prescott, Arizona; seven beautiful great-grandchildren; three sisters: Louise (Crawford) Irvin, of Cornelia, Georgia, Jennie Thompson, of Winston Salem, North Carolina, and Beverly Ann (Jim) Oliver, of Dallas, Texas, and a number of well accomplished nephews and nieces.
He is reunited in Heaven with parents, and his beloved son, Buford Henry “Bucky” Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. in Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville, with his grandson, Rev. Joe Roof, officiating. Private family burial will follow in Loudonville Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday morning from 10 to 11 a.m., one hour prior to services in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be offered to LifeCare Hospice, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH 44691 or the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 833 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, Illinois, 60607.
