MANSFIELD, Ohio – Local gardeners are invited to “Get the Dirt on Soil and Chill Out with an Easy Cold Frame” with Mark Johnson at the Blust Avenue Teaching Garden on Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 417 Blust Avenue, Mansfield.

Johnson, a Stingel Elementary School teacher and avid gardener, is known for the rich soil and easy-to-assemble cold frames in use at the school. He will walk attendees through assembling a PVC cold frame as well as the use of cover crops as soil amendments.

“Healthy soil is of the utmost importance in the garden,” said North End Community Improvement Collaborative Teaching Garden Coordinator Candace Harrell. “This workshop will give us all a valuable lesson in soil improvement without expensive amendments.”

Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather. The program will be held rain or shine, but severe weather may cause a cancellation. The NECIC Facebook page will hold cancellation information. Parking is available in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church parking lot, just west of Blust Avenue.

Light refreshments will be served. The program is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP to NECIC Teaching Garden Coordinator Candace Harrell at 419-525-3101 or Candace@necic-ohio.org.
