MANSFIELD — Mansfield Police Department and Mayor Tim Theaker reported an 18.7 percent decrease in overall crime from January 2015 to January 2016.

Additionally, violent crime was reportedly down 28.5 percent from last January.

“We think that’s pretty significant,” Mansfield police Chief Ken Coontz said.

The data was compiled by the Records and Data Section of the Mansfield Division of Police, according to a press release issued Thursday.

The offenses of murder (homicide), rape, robbery and assault make up the violent crime category. Arson, burglary, larceny and auto theft make up the property crime category. Both are reported by the FBI Uniform Crime Report as “Part I Offenses.”

As indicated in the graph below, officers responded to 187 overall Part I Offense complaints in January 2015. The department responded to 230 during the same time period last year. Violent crimes reported fell from 21 in 2015 to 15 in the month of January 2016.

Additionally, officers investigated 121 accidents in January 2015, compared to 168 reported in January 2016 — a 28 percent decrease.
