GIBSON CITY, Illinois — Paula Jean Mitchell Spangler passed away Friday, Oct. 16 in Gibson Area Hospital Annex. She was 73.
Paula was born on April 13, 1942 in Mansfield to Paul and Leona (Frank) Mitchell. She graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1960. She attended both The Ohio State University and Wittenberg University where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She married James Spangler on June 27, 1964.
Paula taught school in Mansfield; Denver, Colorado; and Aurora, Illinois.
Surviving are her husband James Frederick Spangler; sons Mark (Ann) Spangler of Gibson City, Illinois, and Todd (Kelly) Spangler of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren Emily, Katherine, Kendall, Shannon, Karson, Keaton and Colton; brothers James Mitchell of Toledo and John (Mart) Mitchell of Webster Groves, Missouri. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews Dr. Kelly Mitchell, Traci Mitchell Mills, Clifford Mitchell, Kelsey Mitchell, Holly Kendrick, Beth Gregory and Krissy Dobies. She was blessed with an extended family of cousins and friends including MaryAnn Price Andreas, who she thought of as a sister.
Paula was an active member of the First American Lutheran Church, a volunteer for ACT Theatre Company, and served on the Board of Shepherd’s Closet in Gibson City. She served as president of the Mansfield chapter of PEO. She volunteered at Kingwood Center and always had a love of flowers which showed in her beautiful gardens at her homes.
The Spangler family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. Pastor Sandy Mitchell will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
