MANSFIELD, Ohio — Richland Public Health (RPH) was recently awarded a grant from the Ohio Department of Health to prevent chronic diseases. To kick off the three-and-a-half year grant, RPH will host a Bike to Work day on May 15.

The League of American Bicyclists recognizes May as National Bike Month, and Bike to Work Week is May 11-15. Health Educator Margaret Lin said having a Bike to Work day instead of a whole week would be more feasible for Richland County.

“With this being the first time we’re doing this, and there’s no other biking events surrounding it, we’re going to focus on May 15 as Bike to Work Day and focus our efforts on that one particular day,” said Lin.

The May 15 Bike to Work day will be a rain or shine event across Richland County.

As an alternative to biking the full commute, participants may park their cars at one of four designated areas between 7 and 9 a.m. Each area will distribute free tote bags to participants.

Designated parking areas are: Catholic Charities at 523 Park Avenue East; Mansfield Art Center at 700 Marion Avenue; Mansfield YMCA at 750 Scholl Road; OhioHealth MedCentral Wellness Complex at 1750 West Fourth Street.

Lin mentioned the parking areas could someday become permanent to aid bicycle commuters.

“We’re trying to help Richland County set up in a way that’s an active lifestyle,” she said. The Bike to Work Day is one day, but riding a bicycle in general is good for a healthy lifestyle, she added.

The Mansfield area is this year’s Bike to Work Day event’s main focus. However, Health Educator Paige Warga said there is county-wide interest in active transportation, including bike friendliness.

“We hope that this is a catalyst for people to work toward something like this,” said Lin.

For those on the fence regarding participation, Warga suggested inviting a co-worker to join.

“Ride together, make it fun,” said Warga.

Lin encouraged participants to plan ahead.

“Figure out what route you’re going to take. Make sure your bike’s in working order, you’re wearing a helmet, wearing bright clothing. If you need to change your clothes, bring that stuff with you,” said Lin.

“If they’ve never done it before, go ahead and try it out. This is a chance to do it,” said Lin.
