COLUMBUS, Ohio – State Sen. Larry Obhof (R-Medina) announced the Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 1 today, which continues the state’s effort to fight toxic algae in Lake Erie and ensure clean drinking water for Ohioans.
Obhof co-sponsored Senate Bill 1, which requires publicly-owned water treatment facilities to begin monthly monitoring of phosphorus levels. The bill prohibits the application of fertilizer on frozen and over-saturated ground in vulnerable water basins, and it requires the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to designate a coordinator of harmful algae management and response.
“Senate Bill 1 will allow us to more effectively monitor and respond to water quality issues,” Obhof said. “Lake Erie is one of our greatest natural resources, and we need to do everything we can to protect it.”
The bill will now go to the Ohio House of Representatives for further consideration.
Earlier in the day, Senator Obhof provided sponsor testimony to the Senate Committee on State and Local Government in support of Senate Bill 26. The bill would reduce the filing fees necessary to start a new business in Ohio by more than 20 percent.
