Richard G. “Dick” Reed, age 78, of Shelby, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015 at his home.

 He was born May 20, 1936 in Shelby the son of the late Clarence Alvie and Ohma Elma (Waters) Reed. Dick was a 1954 Graduate of Shelby High School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from Ashland College and received a Master’s Degree in Administration from Bowling Green State University. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War.

 Dick began working at AMF in Shelby prior to attending college. After his college graduation he began his teaching career at Shelby City Schools where he taught typing, and record keeping. He was a highly respected teacher and coach – coaching JV and varsity football, basketball and track, serving with coaches Bill Wilkens, Don Monn, Bill Varble, Ron Stepsis, Howard Plocher. He finished a 31 year teaching career as Shelby’s Athletic Director, retiring in 1996.

 He was a very active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Shelby where he was a member of the Vestry, taught Sunday school and was a lay reader. Church was a very important part of his life. He was President of the Shelby Cloverleaf Square Dance Club, was a member of Johnny Appleseed Wood Carvers Club and was Past President of Shelby Senior Center. He was the proud recipient of the Jess Rath Christian Service Award, Charles C.W. Williams Sixth Man Award and was inducted into the Shelby High School Hall of Fame. Dick’s grandchildren brought him great joy and attending their sporting events was his most important hobby.

 He is survived by his wife: Judy (Brinson) Reed, whom he wed on Dec. 17, 1960; a daughter:Tally (Bob) Delauder of Shelby; a son: Rick Reed of Westerville; 4 grandchildren: Reed Delauder, Brinson Delauder, McClellan “Ella” Delauder and Delaney Reed; a brother: James Reed of Shelby; 2 sisters-in-law: Elaine Reed of Shelby and Sara (Bill) Gregor of Michigan; a brother-in-law: Robert (Connie) Brinson of Shelby. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law: Donna and Ira Clabaugh; a brother: Ned Reed; a brother-in-law: Mark Brinson; and a sister-in-law: Mercedes “Mert” Reed.

 Friends and family are welcome on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 10:30 a.m. by Father Daniel Orr. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby.
