The Bicentennial of the Star Spangled Banner will be celebrated at the Mansfield Blockhouse on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 to 4 p.m. The Mansfield Blockhouse is located in South Park on Brinkerhoff Avenue in Mansfield.
At noon, Boy Scouts will raise the 15-star and 15-stripe flag, the Star Spangled Banner. There will be a short program. Music will also be a part of the event.
Representatives of the Richland County Genealogical Society and the Samuel Lewis Chapter United States Daughters of 1812 will display local history books and distribute information about their groups. Richland County Museum will have some hands-on activities for youngsters.
Volunteers, some in period costume, will be at the blockhouse to share their knowledge about the blockhouse and Richland County’s history. Some will demonstrate skills, such as making shakes for a roof, spinning wool, hand quilting and making walnut ink.
The blockhouse is open 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting, until Sept. 13. This event will be your last opportunity to tour the interior of the blockhouse this year.
Come celebrate the Star Spangled Banner’s 200th birthday and the Mansfield Blockhouse’s 202nd birthday, as well as Richland County’s interesting history, with your friends and neighbors on Sep. 13.
