Ashland University professor and author Joe Mackall will be taking part in a reading and book signing from 6 to 8 p.m. June 6 at Main Street Books, 104 N. Main St.

Mackall is the author of Plain Secrets: An Outsider Among the Amish, a book of nonfiction. Plain Secrets tells the story of Mackall’s long friendship with his Swartzentruber Amish neighbors, the Shetlers. In doing so he creates a nuanced and moving portrait of this most traditional Amish sect.

He is also the author of The Last Street Before Cleveland, a memoir of returning to the places of his past after a childhood friend passes away. In looking for answers about his lost friend, he stumbles onto larger questions about himself. The book recently came out in paperback, and both his books are now available for purchase at Main Street Books. If you cannot attend the event but would like a signed book, please contact the store ahead of time.

In addition to being an author and professor, Mackall is co-founder and co-editor of River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative. His work has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, as well as on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition.” He is director of Creative Writing at Ashland University. He is working on a new memoir tentatively titled, Grandparents in Paradise: Life in the Face of the Fall.
