The sanctuary of St. Peter’s Catholic Church was filled with the music of Baroque composer George Handel’s “Messiah” this past Friday night. The performance, which rang in the weekend before Christmas with a blend of classical musicians and choral singers, was the result of a collaboration between St. Peter’s Church and the Mansfield Symphony.

Before the first notes were struck, St. Peter’s Pastor Fr. Gregory Hite, welcomed the capacity crowd of more than 650 to the church for what he called a true community event. A packed house along with a large number of student and adult volunteers, performers, and parish staff gave credence to the pastor’s characterization.

Mansfield’s classical music community came out in force to fill the large church with music of the Christmas season. The Mansfield Symphony and conductor Thomas Hong were joined in the performance of Handel’s most famous work by the St. Peter’s Traditional Choir directed by Bill Johnson, and the Mansfield Symphony Chorus directed by Dirk Eachus.

More than one hundred musicians and singers strong, the performers were rewarded with numerous breaks for applause, including a standing ovation before the first intermission.

During his introductory remarks, St. Peter’s Music Series director Bill Johnson billed the performance a “one-of-a kind event,” and one that would be the first of an ongoing series of performances throughout the winter and spring.

The St. Peter’s Music Series, which includes eight more events through May of 2014, includes performances by professional musicians, student recitals, Broadway favorites, and collaborations between several area church choirs. Many performances are free and all are open to the public.
