SHELBY — On Sunday, May 15 the 10th Annual Shelby Cancer Rally will take place at Central School, with registration

The first rally was held in May of 2007 and since then the local event has raised over $125,000 for cancer charities and research.

Rally chair Jack Gray said, “Since this is our 10th year, we’re trying to make this the best one yet.”

As in the past the rally will include a non-competitive 5K family fun run, a 6-mile family fun bike ride, a silent auction and a speaker.

There are many items in the Silent Auction including OSU football tickets, Indians and Reds tickets and much more.

Two special features have been added for this year’s rally. For the first time, attendees will be able to register for the National Bone Marrow Registry. Rally co-chair Dave Spangler, a bone marrow transplant recipient, and his wife Linda and other family members will be hosting a sign-up for individuals who would like to register for the national list. It’s an opportunity for someone to possibly save the life of an individual fighting blood cancer. It’s quick to register; some paperwork and swab of your cheek is all it takes.

The speaker for the rally this year is Doug Ulman, a three-time cancer survivor and nationally and internationally recognized cancer advocate. Gray said,“I first met Doug in 2007 when I became involved with LiveSTRONG and a friendship developed which has continued through the years.”

Ulman led the LiveSTRONG foundation from 2001 through 2014. He moved to Columbus to take a position as President and Chief Executive Officer of Pelotonia, a cancer non-profit in Columbus, Ohio that supports research at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

“Since part of the funds raised by the Shelby Cancer Rally are donated to Pelotonia, we felt it was a great opportunity to bring Doug to Shelby to share some of his vision,“ Gray said.

The Cancer Rally will be held Sunday, May 15 on the playground of Central School.

Registration and Silent Auction bidding begin at 1 p.m. and the rally begins at 2 p.m.
