SHELBY — Three brothers were recently selected “Students of the Month” at the Music Academy of Karate and Empowerment, which celebrated its six-month anniversary in March.

Christian Cuevas, Gavin Cuevas and Ronin Cuevas were selected by instructors for their “perseverance, integrity, indomitable spirit, courtesy, and self-control. They also demonstrate kindness to their fellow students and humility on the dojo floor.”

The anniversary month was filled with fun weekly activities for the students, including pajama week, wacky week, and black light week.

“We ended the month with our first fundraiser, a kick-a-punch-a-thon, which earned almost $2,000. The school is raising funding to go toward purchasing a building,” said Sensei Reneta Music.

The school conducted its monthly test at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary with 24 students in attendance. The following students earned belts: Nola Mawhorr, green belt; Amira Withrow, green belt; Abraham Clark, blue belt; and Sophia Breedlove, yellow belt.

In addition to accepting donations for a building, the school is accepting donations to help children with tuition, equipment and uniforms.
