MANSFIELD, Ohio — A collection of 1,682 pounds of unwanted, expired and unused prescription drugs were returned in the region during Saturday’s 10th annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back day.
Law enforcement agencies from the surrounding counties and eight of the 10 METRICH Enforcement Regions participated. Bellville police reported the event, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency, was a success.
“We had a steady stream of people dropping off unwanted medications and we filled several large boxes. We collected approximately 21 pounds of medications in Bellville alone,” said Bellville police Chief Ron Willey. “There were a lot of positive comments and we got the stuff out of the reach of children.”
Mansfield police Lt. Joy Stortz commended citizens and law enforcement who participated. The Richland County Sheriff’s office will continue to accept unwanted, expired and unused prescription drugs.
There were seven drop-off sites in Richland County: Solid Waste Management, the Richland County Sheriff’s Office and police departments in Bellville, Butler, Shelby, Crestline and Lexington.
Nationwide, every state participated except Pennsylvania and Delaware.
