ASHLAND — Congressman Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio) received the Champion of the Historic Tax Credit Award last week from a coalition of organizations whose goal is to ensure the historic communities and heritage of cities and neighborhoods across the United States are preserved.

During the debate of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Gibbs said he fought to make sure the Historic Preservation Tax Credit was not eliminated.

“I often talk about the importance of leveraging private investment and encouraging the public and private sectors to work together for better, more affordable, and safer neighborhoods,” Gibbs said. “The Historic Preservation Tax Credit is a perfect example of that. I have seen the role this tax credit plays in bringing once-dormant buildings back to life with projects in Canton.”

Joyce Barrett, Executive Director of Heritage Ohio, applauded Gibbs’ achievement.

“Congressman Gibbs understands the economic redevelopment power of the Historic Tax Credit and has seen first-hand what it has done in Ohio,” Barrett said. “During tax reform last year, he voiced support and signed letters to the tax writing committee and congressional leadership, urging the House, to keep this critical incentive in the tax code, to preserve our heritage and revitalize our communities. Ohioans are proud to call Rep. Gibbs a Champion of the Historic Tax Credit.”
