MANSFIELD, Ohio – The Renaissance Education Department will host its third annual MindSprouts Creative Writing Showcase on Thursday, May 14 at 7 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public, with donations accepted at the door to support Renaissance education programs.
A variety of student writing will be presented in onstage adaptations of short stories, poems, and plays that were submitted to the MindSprouts Creative Writing Contest. Finalists include:
Kindergarten—2nd Grade Finalists:
· Trenton Ford, Kindergarten, Madison South: “Stars”
· Ethan Close and Taylor Duncan, 2nd Grade, Crestview: “Stained Glass Boat”
· Margaret Restelli, 1st Grade, Lucas: “The Moon Shine”
Grades 3-5 Finalists:
· Allegra Ruhl, 4th Grade, St. Peter’s: “The Search for the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars
· Antonio Restelli, 4th Grade, Lucas: “Why the Moon Turns Orange”
· Adriana R. Bautz, 4th Grade, St. Mary of the Snows: “The Space Sorceress”
Grades 6-8 Finalists:
· Ellie Nickoli, 6th Grade, Lexington: “Celeste Sun and Luna Moon: The Solar Sisters”
· Jada Price, 6th Grade, St. Peter’s: “Together as One, Yet So Far Apart”
· Travis Pittenger, 7th Grade, Madison: “The Moon, the Stars, and the Sun”
· Kacey Holdeheide and Kelli Homan , 6th Grade, Marion: “The Man and the Boy”
· Alexa Blakley, 6th Grade, St. Peter’s: “The Moon on the Water”
Grades 9-12 Finalists:
· Bri Worner, 9th Grade, Clear Fork: “Them”
· Zech Judd, 12th Grade, Mansfield Christian: “Moon Eye”
· Jenna Conrad, 10th Grade, Hillsdale: “Make the Most of It”
All submissions were juried by a team of local educators and passed on for final judging to Renaissance Artistic Director Michael Thomas. Thomas is a prolific playwright and actor, a former member of Chicago’s famed Second City comedy troupe, and has written extensively for major motion pictures and television, including Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, and Moonrise Kingdom, among many others.
The MindSprouts program is open to any student attending kindergarten through 12th grade.
Students were invited to submit one composition in one or more of the following categories: short story, play, or poem.
All submissions to the MindSprouts contest were required to correspond to the 2014 theme: “The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars.”
