MANSFIELD, Ohio – Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist, an extension program of The Ohio State University, will hold training for Richland County volunteers. This program has not been offered in over ten years.
The mission of the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist (OCVN) program is to promote awareness and citizen stewardship of Ohio’s natural resources through science-based education and community service. An OCVN is an individual with a passion for the natural world who wishes to attend training and use their knowledge by giving back to the community through volunteer service.
Classes will run from August 18 through October 27 with a wrap-up class on November 10. Classes will be held Tuesday evenings and one Saturday per month.
Topics include plants, watershed, soil, aquatic life, stewardship, birds, reptiles, insects, mammals, and ecological concepts, among others.
Requirements include 40 volunteer hours the first year, and 20 hours per year thereafter, with 8 hours of advanced training annually.
The cost is $150 and payment is due, after acceptance, by May 31.
