According to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, every three minutes, worldwide, a child is diagnosed with cancer. In the United States, one in five children diagnosed will not survive. Research remains a child’s best hope for a cure, and St. Baldrick’s hopes to raise funds for research with the St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving event.
St. Baldrick’s “shavees” raise money for research by getting bald in solidarity with children fighting cancer. The events began as a challenge between businessmen and have grown from one event in 2000 to over 1,300 events in 2013.
Legend’s Sports Grill and Pub in Shelby will host the annual St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving event on March 20, with shaving beginning at 5 p.m.
The money raised for St. Baldrick’s Foundation goes directly to research and to funding fellows that have chosen pediatric cancer as their field of study.
“This is the 6th year that Legends has hosted this event and the 9th year I have had the privilege of being involved in organizing,” said event organizer Judy Caporini. “Due to the amazing support of local communities, we have been able to raise over $160,000 in the past five years at Legends.”
“We have 12 honored/remembered kids from just our immediate communities. It would be wonderful if we no longer needed fundraisers to find a cure, if our efforts combined with the other 400,000+ participants of St. Baldrick’s events were successful in stomping out these horrible diseases,” she said.
