Randy E. Keith, 81, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 16, 2026 . A brilliant scholar, devoted hobbyist, and loyal friend, Randy lived a life defined by intellect, curiosity, humor, and quiet kindness.

Born February 20, 1945, in Mansfield, Ohio, Randy was the son of Earl and Clara (Bloom) Keith. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School before pursuing his lifelong passion for science. After graduating from Fenn College (now Cleveland State University), he continued his studies at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he earned both a Master’s Degree and a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry. His doctoral thesis focused on saltwater aquaculture, a subject that perfectly blended his scientific mind with his fascination for aquatic life. His research and writings were published in Aquaculture Journal and Aquaculture Modern Sciences.

Randy dedicated his professional life to education as a tenured professor at The Ohio State University, where he taught chemistry for many years. He believed science should inspire wonder and discovery, and he carried that philosophy into every aspect of his life.

An avid hobbyist with endless curiosity, Randy’s knowledge of aquatic marine life extended far beyond academia. His home featured an expansive and thriving saltwater aquarium that stretched across much of his living room.He was also an accomplished gemologist who appreciated the beauty and complexity found in nature’s finest details.

Randy found great joy and camaraderie in his weekly Dungeons & Dragons gatherings, participating for more than 40 years. His meticulous nature was reflected in the intricate painting and detailing of his game pieces, each crafted with remarkable care and creativity. He loved the outdoors, especially escaping to the rivers and streams of Colorado where he enjoyed trout fishing and the peace found in nature.

He had a special love for animals, particularly his many beloved cats throughout the years. Randy was especially fond of purebred Abyssinians, drawn to their intelligence and personalities.

Randy also appreciated the craftsmanship and power of classic American muscle cars. From his unforgettable purple 1970 Plymouth Road Runner to his more recent 2020 Dodge Challenger Hellcat, he simply enjoyed knowing the power was there beneath the hood. Though he was never one to drive fast, he appreciated the engineering and spirit behind those cars.

Those who knew Randy will fondly remember his wonderful sense of humor, his ability to tell captivating stories, and the warmth he brought to gatherings. He was also known for his love of fine food and baked goods; ground-cherry pie, and peach crisp were among his favorite desserts. His homemade fettucine alfredo recipe was prepared each holiday season (JFK’s own family recipe.)

Randy is survived by his sister, Chris McQuillen; sister-in-law, Maxine Keith; nieces and nephews, Shawn Kendall, Tammy McQuillen, Scott McQuillen, Tracy Johnson, Michael (Raymonette) Keith, and Steve (Jennifer) Keith; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and his dear companion, Beth Bennett.
