Nathaniel “Nate” R. Dowds, age 43 of Granville, Ohio unexpectedly passed away Sunday, June 7, 2026, at his residence.
Born March 13, 1983, in Shelby, Ohio, to Daniel Grant Dowds and Cynthia (Knapp) Dowds-Warmington, Nate was a 2001 graduate of Shelby High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division from 2001 to 2005. After completing his military service, Nate attended The Ohio State University, earning his undergraduate degree in Business Administration & Management in 2008. He then continued his education at Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, California, where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 2011.
Nate proudly represented Team Rubicon, a veteran-led organization providing disaster relief efforts worldwide, serving as their attorney. For the past 10 years, he had been employed by AEP in various roles, most recently serving as a Transmission Business Development Manager in Columbus, where he was respected for his dedication, leadership, and professionalism.
He cherished the company of his many friends, particularly the close-knit group he remained devoted to since high school. Nate never met a stranger, and his generous heart was evident in the kindness he showed others each day. Whether volunteering his time with Columbus Meals on Wheels program or passing out care packages he kept in his car for those experiencing homelessness or anyone simply in need of a helping hand, Nate always looked for ways to care for others.
Nate had a deep love of learning and constantly challenged himself to grow in knowledge each day. He also enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns. More than anything, Nate adored his family. He was the very best dad to his two children and treasured every moment spent with them. Lately, he and his son, Jonathan, had developed a shared love for monster trucks, and the two eagerly looked forward to their trips to Monster Jam together.
As a family, Nate, his wife, and children loved spending time outdoors. They frequently went canoeing, swimming, riding bikes, and gardening together. Nate was happiest simply being together with the people he loved most.
In addition to his mother Cindy and her husband Byron, he is survived by his loving wife Megan (Dailey) Dowds of Granville; their two children Jonathan Dowds and Grace Dowds; two siblings, Shawn Dowds of Seattle, Washington, Travis (Crystal) Dowds of Portland, Oregon; two nephews Devyn Dowds of Dublin, Ohio, Luke Dailey of Nashport, Ohio; maternal grandparents, Pat Knapp of Shelby and Donald Jones of Mansfield; father and mother-in-law Neal and Sheila Dailey of Nashport; countless aunt, uncles, cousins and close friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his father Daniel Dowds in 2016; a special aunt Heather Carpenter and uncle Greg Knapp.
Friends may visit the family at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Immediately following the visitation at 3:00 PM, military honors will be performed, honoring Nate’s dedicated service to the United States Army and our country.
A celebration of his life will be held by the family at a later date.
