MANSFIELD: Robert A. Metz Sr. 90, of Mansfield passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2025 in OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.
The son of Kenneth L. “Pete” and Sophie (Hornung) Metz, Bob was born June 25, 1934 and attended Mansfield City Schools. In his youth he was the former Friendly House City Marble Champion in 1945.
He proudly served his country in the Army, joining the military in 1956. During his service he was stationed for 1 year in Germany. Bob served as a heavy equipment operator and was awarded as a marksman and rifle expert. He was honorably discharged in 1958.
On July 11, 1959 he married Marcia McCaskey. The two celebrated 49 years of marriage.
Bob worked for Dominion Electric for 19 years, Westinghouse 3 years, and for Madison Jr. High as custodian for 31 years before his retirement in 2006.
He loved to watch his grandsons play sports and enjoyed cheering on the Madison Rams football and basketball teams. As a young adult he enjoyed playing on local fast pitch softball teams. Competitive Bob was a talented bowler and competed in numerous leagues at Park Lanes.
He enjoyed fishing and would relax while driving around Mansfield and the surrounding areas in his van. He was a dedicated member of the “McDonald’s Coffee Club” at the Stewart Road McDonalds.
He is survived by his son Robert A Metz, Jr. “Rob” (Audrey) of Mansfield, and daughter Tricia Hatfield of Mansfield; grandchildren Dustin, Derek, and Dylan Metz, and Jack Hatfield; brother Glenn Metz; sister-in-law Shirley Metz; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Marcia Metz who passed away March 25, 2008; granddaughter Brittany Inscore; and siblings Gerry Hunter, Lauretta Taylor, Jeannie Frederick, Charlotte Rachel, Kenneth Metz Jr., Roger Metz, Donald Metz, and Larry Metz.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 17, 2025 from 10 am – 12 noon in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where his funeral will begin at 12 noon. Military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will be held on the funeral home grounds. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
