Marion L. “Pete” Altman, of Mansfield went to be with his Lord Wednesday, December 18, 2024 surrounded by family at Brethren Care Center in Ashland.

He was born March 7, 1931 in Mansfield to the late Ray D. and Sarah (Rupert) Altman and graduated from Lexington High School in 1949. Pete served in the U.S. Navy for five years, and though he was proud of his service, he was quick to pass the spotlight to other veterans close to him, especially his wife Jo Ann. Pete worked as an auto mechanic and as a delivery driver for Hi-Lo Trailer Company. He returned to school, graduating from both Ashland College and Kent State University, enabling him to teach auto mechanics and later math at Malabar and Mansfield Senior High Schools. Pete retired in 1991.

Meticulous and organized, Pete desired order and succinct scheduling but not to the extent of being overbearing or unkind. He and his wife Jo Ann embodied a unique blend of strict rules, but with caring compassion. He was a long-time member of First English Lutheran Church where he was a member of the choir. Pete also coached little league baseball and participated in slow and fast pitch leagues. He enjoyed a good round of golf, camping, winters in Florida, and many hands of pinochle. He was enthusiastic about Mt. Dew, oatmeal raisin cookies, and a cup of black coffee after supper. Pete was selfless, humble, talented in many ways, and had no room for tomfoolery. Pete loved his family above all things, and enjoyed spending quality time sharing stories and his experiences.

Pete is survived by four grandchildren John (Deb) Altman of Bellville, Ashley Altman of Ashland, Ian (Courtney) Altman of Ashland and Sarah Altman of Houston, TX; daughters-in-law Debbie Altman of Mansfield and Julie Altman of Ashland; five great grandchildren Samantha, Gavin, Lyla, Emily, and Eleanor Altman, and his cherished friend Norma Brindle.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jo Ann on March 3, 2015, his three sons Martin Altman, Michael Altman, and Timothy Altman; and his siblings Elinore Cunning, Rev. Ray Altman, Jr., Dwight Altman, Francis Mitchell, Jean Liston, and Joanne Wolfe.

The Altman family will host calling hours Monday, December 23, 2024 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where the service will follow at 1:30 pm. Pastor Jonathan Stufft will officiate and military honors, performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail, will take place on the grounds of the funeral home. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park.
