CRESTLINE — A Crestline teacher died Sunday evening after a two-vehicle crash in Fairfield County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Crestline Exempted Village Schools.

Cameron Lyon, 23, of Caledonia, died at Fairfield Medical Center a short time after the Sept. 6 crash on U.S. 33 near U.S. 22 in Hocking Township.

Fairfield County crash remains under investigation

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Lancaster Post responded to the crash at approximately 6:15 p.m.

According to a press release from the patrol, Lyon drove a 2025 Chevrolet Trax westbound on U.S. 33 when a 2016 GMC Terrain traveling eastbound went off the right side of the roadway.

The GMC Terrain overcorrected, went off the road to the left and overturned into the westbound lanes, where it struck Lyon’s Chevrolet Trax. The GMC Terrain then caught fire.

Hocking Township EMS treated Lyon at the scene and transported him to Fairfield Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Abrielle Kerns, 23, of Lancaster, was a passenger in the Chevrolet Trax and was transported by Berne Township EMS to Mount Carmel East Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Lancaster EMS transported the driver of the GMC Terrain, Alvaro Uriber-Gonzalez, 33, of Columbus, to Fairfield Medical Center with minor injuries.

Alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash, according to the press release.

The Fairfield County Sheriff’s office told WSYX in Columbus that Uriber-Gonzalez is in the U.S. illegally and there is an ICE detainer on file for him. Uriber-Gonzalez is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and operating without a license.

MSN reported that Uriber-Gonzalez was deported in 2020, according to court documents. He is now in the Fairfield County Jail and being held on a $5 million bond.

The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, Hocking Township Fire and EMS, Berne Township Fire and EMS, Amanda Fire and EMS, Lancaster Fire and EMS, the Ohio Department of Transportation and A&L Towing assisted patrol at the scene.

Crestline schools mourn teacher

Lyon taught fifth- and sixth-grade students at Crestline Exempted Village School.

“It is with profound sadness that we share that one of our 5th/6th grade teachers, Mr. Cameron Lyon, tragically passed away yesterday following a car accident,” the district said in a Facebook post.

“Our hearts are broken for his family, his fiancee, his students, his colleagues and all those whose lives he touched,” the district said.

The school district asked its Bulldog community to keep Lyon’s family and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers.

As students and staff return to school, counselors will be available to support those who need someone to talk with as the school community grieves, according to the district.

“During the difficult days ahead, may we surround his family, our students, our staff and one another with compassion, support and love,” the district said.
