North central Ohio’s top swimmers will put it all on the line this weekend at their respective district meets.
The Northwest District meet will take place Friday and Saturday at Bowling Green State University’s Cooper Pool.
The Division II portion of the meet will be held Friday, with the girls swimming at 10 a.m. and the boys hitting the water at 4:30 p.m. Division I swimmers will follow the same schedule Saturday.
For the swimmers who will be in action, the relaxed atmosphere of last week’s Malabar sectional meet will be replaced by a great sense of urgency.
The top-three finishers in the individual races and the top two placers in the relay events automatically qualify to next week’s state meet in Canton.
For those who don’t automatically qualify, at-large state bids — 20 in individual events and 16 in relays — will be available based on times from all four of this weekend’s district meets.
“We talk about having a big dinner Friday at Bowling Green and you want to have a seat at the table,” Lexington coach Brock Spurling said after last week’s sectional. “If you’re not in the top 32, you don’t get a seat.”
Lexington’s Ivan Prykhodko will be the top seed in the boys 100-yard breaststroke after winning last weeks Malabar sectional title in 1:00.13.
The area’s other top-seeded swimmers are Ontario siblings Grantham (boys 100 freestyle) and Mirielle Trumpower (girls 100 butterfly), Shelby’s Emma Montgomery (girls 500 freestyle) and Colonel Crawford’s Ava Finnan (girls 200 freestyle).
The Ontario bots 400 freestyle relay team of Grantham Trumpower, Logan Bernat, Owen Walter and Evan Ruhe turned in the top time of 3:26.21 in last week’s sectional.
