LUCAS — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), in partnership with the Ohio History Connection, has unveiled a striking new mural at Malabar Farm State Park celebrating Pulitzer Prize–winning author, conservationist, and Malabar Farm founder Louis Bromfield.
The artwork is part of Ohio’s recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, highlighting the state’s rich cultural and historical contributions.
Renowned muralist Scott Hagan, widely known as “The Barn Artist,” began work on the barn’s transformation on Sept. 28 and completed the large scale portrait on Oct. 1. With bold lines and a distinctive style, the mural honors Bromfield’s legacy as a pioneering voice for sustainable agriculture and rural life.
“Louis Bromfield’s vision helped shape the way we understand conservation and land stewardship in Ohio,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “This mural is more than a work of art — it’s a tribute to the enduring impact of his ideas and the beauty he saw in working the land.
“We’re proud to celebrate his legacy as part of America’s 250th anniversary.”
The newly painted barn serves as a vibrant addition to Malabar Farm State Park, one of Ohio’s most beloved historic and agricultural landmarks.
Visitors can now view the mural as part of their park experience, connecting Bromfield’s past innovations with the ongoing work to preserve Ohio’s natural and cultural heritage.
The park is also recognized as a stop on the America 150-Ohio Innovation Trail, paying homage to Bromfield’s contributions to conservation agricultural practices.
The project is among several initiatives across Ohio celebrating the nation’s semiquincentennial, while spotlighting the people and places that have shaped the state’s story.
