MANSFIELD — An attempted arrest Saturday evening led to an hours-long standoff between Mansfield police and a 22 year-old who shot at an officer before fleeing.

Tyler Morley, the man who police say shot his gun, is being considered by Mansfield police as “armed and dangerous.”

“Should anyone come into contact with Tyler Morley, please call local police immediately,” read the news release, issued late Saturday night.

It was unclear Sunday whether any injuries related to the incident were reported.

Mansfield Police officer Jacob Oblak saw Tyler Morley standing outside of a home on Clairmont Avenue around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Oblak tried to arrest Morley because the officer knew of an active warrant for violence. The arrest led to a struggle, the news release read.

“During the struggle, (Morley) began to produce a handgun, at which time officer Oblak attempted to achieve cover. During this time a gunshot was heard by officer Oblak as (Morley) fled,” reads the news release.

Police thought Morley had retreated into a home on Clairmont Avenue, which is near Bowman Street and located between West Fourth and West Fifth streets.

Officers evacuated occupants of the home, called in ASORT (the area’s SWAT team) and tried to communicate with Morley. After several hours, officers used “chemical agents” to try and get Morley to come outside.

Hours later officers search the residence and found no one inside.

Police continue to investigate the residence and expect additional charges to be filed “pending review by the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office.”
