SHELBY — Marvin Memorial Library will present “Shelby Becomes a City” on Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the library, 29 W. Whitney Ave.

The town of Shelby became a city as it reached a population of more than 5,000 in the 1920 census. On Aug. 9, 1921 Shelby residents voted to create a charter government for the new city.

Join Shelby City Council member and former Mayor Garland Gates and historian Christina Yetzer Drain for a look at what life was like in 1921 and explore the charter form of governing that is still in existence today.
