MANSFIELD — After a record two years in-between, Ohio has a new Outstanding Teen.
Miss Miami Valley Madison Yuzwa took the title of Miss Ohio’s Outstanding Teen at the Renaissance Theatre on Tuesday evening. The 2019 Outstanding Teen Madison DeFrank awarded her the crown.
Yuzwa was one of 13 contestants vying for the crown. She received a $2,000 scholarship as the winner.
She also received an additional $250 scholarship as the winner of the talent contest for her power tumbling routine. Talent makes up 40% of a candidate’s final score; a private interview makes up 30%, evening wear makes up 20% and lifestyle/fitness makes up 10%.
Yuzwa’s hometown is Broadview Heights. She was the third runner-up in 2019’s contest.
Her social impact initiative is F.I.T. to be Confident, empowering confidence in teens through fitness, nutrition, and self-respect:
F. Finding an activity that will increase your heart rate 6 min 5 x weekly.
I. Incorporating good nutrition practices.
T. To love yourself, self-respect, and having a positive attitude.
“Confidence comes in all shapes and sizes,” she said on stage Tuesday.
As the winner of the Miss Ohio’s Outstanding Teen Program, Yuzwa is now eligible to compete as the state representative in the national Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Program, held in July.
Shelby’s Ava Nastasi, Miss North Coast Outstanding Teen, and Bellville’s Baylee Shoemaker, Miss Tallawanda’s Outstanding Teen, were among a field of 13 candidates.
Nastasi was named the third runner-up in Tuesday’s contest; she was the second runner-up in 2019. Her talent was singing “They Just Keep Moving The Line” from the TV series “Smash.”
Shoemaker showed off her dance talent to Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous.”
The Miss America Organization created the State and National Outstanding Teen Scholarship Programs to encourage positive achievement by helping to nurture and build scholastic achievements, creative accomplishments, healthy living, and community involvement of our nation’s youth.
The Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Organization also works to establish community-based initiatives and mentoring programs aimed at helping the nation’s youth to build character and gain the skills necessary for success in the real world.
