Over the years, all the tombstones in Ball Cemetery have been flattened by vandals. A few are still legible, but most are not.
-
I noticed by the front gate that some things never change. An empty beer can sat in the grass. The invasive poison hemlock that now surrounds the burial ground can be seen in the background under the dark clouds of the passing thunderstorm.

The cluster of gravestones near the northwest corner of the cemetery appear to be the three Balch graves. Sophronia’s stone is no longer legible.
-
The stone transcribed as “William Baugh” in the Knox County Cemetery Book was actually William Balch. He was the brother of Sophronia, and, like her, he died young.

Ball Cemetery is located on Beckley Road, just west of Ohio State Route 13, north of Mount Vernon. The township posted a sign with the names of those buried in the cemetery, because few stones are now readable.
