MANSFIELD — Daniel Crow was promoted as the newest captain of the Mansfield Fire Department during a brief ceremony Monday morning.

Crow, 38, has been an officer with the department for 15 years. He became head of the department’s Fire Prevention/Arson Investigation Bureau two years ago.

Lieutenant Shawn Yerian pinned the captain’s badge on Crow’s uniform. Yerian and Crow both joined the force as rookies around the same time and spent the early years of their career together at Station Three.

“He’s a very intelligent guy and he’s really dedicated to the department,” Yerian said. “He really supports the firefighters, the administration, and he just wants to see MFDP be the best.”

Crow oversaw the implementation of EMS software for the department last year, Yerian said. He also credited Crow’s leadership with better code enforcement and a safer Mansfield.

Crow will continue to oversee the fire prevention bureau. The bureau conducts all fire investigations, including origin and cause and arson probes. It also handles inspections and code enforcement and public education.

Head of the bureau has been a captain’s role in the past, but the position was eliminated and reinstated as a lieutenant role to cut costs during the Great Recession.

“This restores that job to its entirety and we plan to keep it that way,” said Steve Strickling, Mansfield Fire Chief.

Crow will also be taking on some additional responsibilities.

“We’re going to start working on some new ordinances to update our fire prevention code and that’s going to entail a new plan review process that we’re working on for construction projects,” Crow said. “As captain, I’ll be working to update those ordinances and to kind of bring us up to that next level where we need to be at.”

Crow considers it a great honor to work for the Mansfield Fire Department.

“I’ve always been very proud to be here and proud to serve this community and I look forward to continuing to do that in the future,” he said.
