MANSFIELD — Richland County had 80 active cases of COVID-19 as of Friday morning, according to information provided by public health officials.
Richland Public Health reported 604 confirmed coronavirus cases and 30 probable, totaling 634.
With 541 presumed recoveries (roughly 85 percent of the positive cases) and 13 deaths (2 percent of the cases), that leaves 80 active cases in a county of 121,000 residents.
Around the state, according to the Ohio Department of Health website, there are 17,905 active cases among a population of 11 million people.
ODH reported Friday afternoon there have been 1,131 new positive tests in Ohio during the last 24 hours, which is 50 below the 21-day average of 1,181.
There were 29 deaths reported since Thursday, six above the 21-day average of 23. ODH reported 105 new hospitalizations, seven more than the 21-day average of 98. There were also 12 new ICU admissions, four below the 21-day average of 16.
Richland County has had 87 total hospitalizations (about 14 percent of total cases) since the pandemic reached Ohio in March, including 11 currently in the hospital for treatment.
Of the 87 local residents hospitalized, 28 have spent time in an intensive care unit (about 4 percent of total cases).
Congregate-care settings in Richland County, including long-term care facilities and the two state prisons, continue to be concerns for health officials.
Of the county’s positive tests, 106 (17 percent) came from residents or staff members in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, according to the ODH website — 65 residents and 41 staff members.
Country Meadows Nursing Home, according to the website, has 13 active cases among residents and 14 among staff. The facility has had 53 total positive tests since the pandemic began (32 residents, 21 staff).
The only two other long-term care sites with active cases in Richland County are Crestwood Care Center (one staff member) and Wedgewood Estates Assisted Living Center (one resident).
According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections website, which was updated Thursday, there have been 5,622 positive COVID-19 tests around the state among inmates and staff members.
At the Mansfield Correctional Institution, there has been one death linked to COVID-19 among inmates, though it’s listed as a “probable” coronavirus death.
There were 352 MANCI inmates in quarantine after possible exposure to coronavirus, the most of any prison in the state as of Thursday. Two inmates were in isolation with current positive tests. The website said 31 of the prison’s staff members have tested positive since March and that 19 of those workers have recovered. There have been no staff deaths due to COVID-19 at MANCI.
The numbers are better at the Richland Correctional Institution with 34 inmates in quarantine and one in isolation after a positive test as of Thursday. Four staff members have had positive tests since March, with two recoveries. There have been no inmate or staff deaths due to COVID-19 at RICI.
Since the pandemic began, Ohio has reported 106,557 positive tests, 12,128 hospitalizations, 3,748 deaths and 84,904 presumed recoveries.
Of the deaths, 2,128 came from residents living in long-term care facilities, or roughly 57 percent of the total deaths. Another 82 deaths came from the state’s prisons, including 77 inmates and five staff members.
