MANSFIELD — April has proven to be a wild and snowy month in Ohio.

Today’s forecast will only add to that erratic reputation.

According to the National Weather Service, here’s what to expect:

Snow will overspread the area from west to east today (April 17).

This snow will mix in or transition to rain this afternoon as temperatures warm.

The heaviest snow is expected to occur in northwest Ohio this morning and again this evening/tonight for northwest Pennsylvania. Snowfall rates as high as 2 inches per hour will be possible.

Snowfall accumulations are mainly expected to occur on elevated and grassy surfaces but roads may become snow covered, especially with the heaviest snow bands.

Portions of north central and northeast Ohio will have trouble accumulating snow due to warmer temperatures this afternoon.

What has changed:

Timing is slightly later overall, resulting in slightly lowered snow totals for Ohio counties and slightly higher for Pennsylvania Counties.

The higher snowfall forecast for northwest Pennsylvania has prompted a Winter Weather Advisory for inland Erie County, Pennsylvania.

In addition, gusty winds are expected this afternoon into the evening hours.

Threat: Gusty winds around 35 mph

Location: Near and south of I-70

Timing: Noon to 8 p.m.

Impact: Unsecured items may be blown around. These winds may also impact tent testing sites across the area.

Confidence: Moderate
