MADISON TOWNSHIP — It was cold and soggy and altogether unpleasant, but the conditions didn’t seem to bother Madison’s Chesney Davis.
The Richland Bank Athlete of the Week, Davis scored a pair of goals as the Rams captured a third straight district title with a 4-3 victory over Ontario on a sloppy Saturday afternoon at Lexington High School.
The rain never relented and neither did Davis. Her goal off a Taylor Huff cross gave the Rams a 3-2 lead with 1:47 to play in the first half. She added what proved to be a very important insurance goal with 29:43 remaining in the second half.
“Of course I’d rather not be playing in the rain,” Davis said afterward. “The ball moves really fast. You’ve got to really control it and pass to feet.”
A junior, Davis was an unlikely hero Saturday. She had only three goals coming into the district championship match.
“For her to step up was amazing,” said Taylor Huff, Madison’s All-American who scored two goals and assisted on Davis’ first goal. “I’m so proud of her.”
Davis scored two goals as a freshman as the Rams reached the Division II state semifinals in 2017 and added eight last year.
“Chesney stepped up today. She only scored three goals all year and she had two today,” Madison coach Zac Huff said. “She saved it for the right time. That’s awesome for her and that’s awesome for a coach.
“I preach to them all the time that someone else has to step up. Taylor is going to do what Taylor is going to do. Kudos to Chesney Davis for stepping up.”
The Rams will play Rocky River in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brunswick High School.
“It feels great,” Davis said of reaching the regional tournament for a third straight year. “I’m really proud of everybody. We all played hard.”
