MANSFIELD — As temperatures head below zero Sunday night, the Richland County Emergency Management Agency has announced an emergency shelter for local residents in need.
This warming shelter opened at 6 p.m. at the Community Service building, 39 N. Park St., home of the Mansfield office of the American Red Cross. It will remain open until Monday at 8 a.m., Mansfield Mayor Tim Theaker announced.
Temperatures, down to 5 degrees at 7 p.m., will slide below zero after midnight and reach minus-8. With the windchill, it will feel like 25 below zero, according to the National Weather Service.
The bitter, dangerous cold comes one day after a winter storm dumped eight or more inches of snow on Richland County, which has made travel difficult throughout Sunday.
