PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth-Shiloh Local School district has received a $12,217 grant to update security at its elementary school, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) announced this week.
The district, located in northern Richland County, intends to use the funds to install 18 indoor-outdoor security cameras with accessories and installation in and around its elementary school building.
“It was something we had discussed that we needed to do right away anyways,” said Plymouth-Shiloh Local School district’s treasurer, Gavyn Bazley. “The security system out there, it started to need replaced.”
He explained the current system was “a little outdated and becoming not serviceable.”
The grant covers three-quarters of the total cost for Plymouth-Shiloh, Bazley said. He anticipates the district will cover about $4,000.
“We are able to do everything we planned to do,” Bazley said. “We probably could’ve tackled it anyways, but it was good to save money.”
The district was one of eight Ohio school districts and two private schools to receive a portion of nearly $243,000 to enhance safety and security under an expanded safety grant program launched last year by the Ohio BWC.
“We want to improve workplace safety across Ohio, and that’s especially important in workplaces that house and educate our children, the future of this state,” said BWC administrator and CEO, Stephanie B. McCloud in a press release.
The grants ranged from $10,838 to $40,000 and are the first awarded out of $4 million the BWC has slated for Pre-K to 12th grade safety upgrades for fiscal years 2019 and 2020.
BWC announced the funding last year as a component of its $1.5 billion rebate program.
