MANSFIELD — The most lethal dynamic duo in north central Ohio basketball prowls the floor at the Franciscan Activity Center.

St, Peter’s seniors Jared Jakubick and Elijah Cobb lived up to that billing on Friday night by pumping in a combined 54 points in a 68-44 pounding of Lucas during a Mid-Buckeye Conference clash.

“They have a toughness about them,” coach Joe Jakubick said. “They’re pretty good offensively, but they’re really good defensively, too.”

The spotlight shone even brighter on the explosive combo as sophomore post Jonah Ramey sat out with a strained shoulder.

“Without (Ramey) they spread it out a little bit more and when they drove there was more room in there,” Lucas coach Taylor Iceman noted. “It’s not like we didn’t know about those guys, they’re great players.”

The Spartans (10-0 overall, 5-0 in the MBC) led 16-7 in the first quarter, but Lucas made 9 of 11 shots in the second period to pull within 36-29 at the half.

To that point Cobb and Jakubick had 34 of St. Peter’s 36 points. But it was the defensive end of the floor that had their coach’s attention.

“We talked at halftime that we hadn’t played our best defensively,” coach Jakubick said. “Give them the credit, they made the shots.

“We said that in the first three to four minutes of the second half we’re going to see what kind of team we have.”

Lucas (5-2, 2-2) sliced the deficit to 36-32 early in the third quarter, but the Spartans finished the frame with a 13-2 burst and were never threatened again.

Jared Jakubick tied a season high with 32 points, while Cobb had 22 points. Junior Caleb Stewart added nine.

Brian Sauder and Logan Niswander each had nine for the Cubs.

Jakubick said Ramey should be back Saturday night for a game at Columbus Watterson.
