ONTARIO — The St. Peter’s basketball team had a busy weekend.

On Friday night the Spartans pulled away from Crestline 71-38. Then, less than 15 hours later, the Spartans disposed of Galion 71-56 at the first game of the Richland Source Challenge at Ontario High School on Saturday morning.

“It was almost like AAU ball where you play the late game and then get up the next morning,” coach Joe Jakubick said.

His team looked a little groggy early. The Tigers, led by super sophomore Isaiah Aslip forged a 16-13 edge before the Spartans peeled off an 11-0 run that encompassed the end of the first period and the early second quarter.

“I really didn’t know what to expect,” Jakubick said. “Galion came out and competed and hit some open shots … They came in really focused and did a nice job.”

Jakubick switched his son Jared, a lanky defender, on to Aslip, and later senior point guard Isaiah Cobb took over the assignment as St. Peter’s cruised to a 30-23 halftime edge.

Galion (2-5) climbed back to within 50-40 to start the fourth quarter, but a 13-0 run all but finished it for the Spartans.

“I think we’re a lot better defensively (this year),” Jared Jakubick said.

The Spartans improved to 8-0 with Cobb and Jakubick, veteran starters from back-to-back Elite Eight teams, leading the way. Jakubick finished with 19 points, while Cobb had 15. Junior sniper Caleb Stewart led the way wiht 20 points, while emerging 6-4 sophomore Jonah Ramey chipped in 13 points and was a presence in the lane.

“Caleb is a great player,” Jared Jakubick said. “He has improved so much over the summer.”

Aslip led the Tigers with 18, including four treys, while Tristan Williams contributed nine points and Colten Skaggs had eight.
