Robert Smith

Robert Smith was part of the greatest generation because of values, hard work and the importance of family. Robert L. Smith, 89, of Galion passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the home of his daughter, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born September 8, 1927 in Shelby and was the son of the late Russell H. and Mary E. (Lash) Smith.

Robert was a 1945 graduate of Tiro High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Army. He met Rachel Werstler who was attending Wittenberg University and he decided to follow her there and would receive his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1951. Robert worked in the Accounting Department at PPG in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Wichita Falls, Texas and Crestline for over 30 years.

Robert was a member and past treasurer of St. Paul Lutheran Church in North Robinson. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Crestline. Robert knew the importance of fitness, and was an active member of the Galion Community Center for many years. He and Rachel enjoyed western square dancing and were members of the former Bucyrus Buckaroo Club.

Robert is survived by his wife of 68 years Rachel (Werstler) Smith of Galion whom he married on July 3, 1949. He is also survived by his four daughters, Catherine (Kenneth) Eastham of Hundred, West Virginia, Constance (Robert) Satchell of St. Louis, Missouri, Carol (William) Porter of Galion and Cynthia (Gary) Williams of Clarksburg, West Virginia; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a cousin Sarah (David) Dowds of Greensboro, North Carolina; three step-grandchildren and eight step- great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833 where services will be held at 10:30a.m. Wednesday, June 7 with Pastor Jarrod Schaaf officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 7 at St. Jacob’s Cemetery in Canton, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
