James Williams, a Christian Hip-Hop artist has a record coming out in June.

MANSFIELD — James Williams goes about making music to praise his god in a different way than most contemporary Christian music.

“The art I do is really different than contemporary music,” said Williams, a Christian hip-hop artist. “As an artist I want to think outside the proverbial box.”

Williams has created his second album, “Praiseology, the Freshman Years.”

The record’s name, the artist said, means he is never finished learning about his relationship with God.

The album, which is to be released June 2 with a concert at Oasis of Love Church, holds six songs broken up by interludes, he said.

The songs will use a mix of nostalgia from hip hop hits and the creativity of Williams.

The artist said he grew up in New Jersey, which he called the “Birthplace of hip-hop” and draws from many samples of the 1970 hits.

“The songs derive from what my relationship with God and what I’m inspired by,” he said. “Really fun, high energy – different than what you’d expect on a Christian record.”

Williams said he began his musical venture in 2015 using a flip phone to record melodies as they came to his head.

“I don’t take credit for my music. It was all him (God),” he said.

Williams’ music is available on all major electronic media including Spotify, Amazon and iTunes.
