ASHLAND — Seeking orthodontic treatment at the appropriate age can be very important, and finding the right orthodontic practice can make it a great experience! Here are some guidelines and hints to make this as easy as possible.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children be seen for their first orthodontic exam no later than age 7. At Gregg Orthodontics, we prefer to meet children around this same age, since this is when most of the permanent first molars and front teeth erupt.

A majority of children will not need orthodontic treatment at the time of his or her first exam. But orthodontists are able to properly evaluate a child’s tooth development and jaw growth. Most importantly, this visit provides the doctor and team with the opportunity to build a friendly relationship with each child and helps to ensure that he or she will feel comfortable with what happens when visiting the office.

The orthodontist can also ease any concerns parents have regarding their child’s smile and educate them on some of the treatment modalities that orthodontists now offer (Invisalign, clear braces, etc).

The orthodontist may recommend some type of treatment during this visit, depending on the severity of the problem.

For example, some children have oral habits (such as thumb/finger sucking) that can significantly affect tooth eruption and bite position. In these cases, early intervention to help stop the habit can prevent further damage and even resolve the associated problems created by the habit. Some children have severely protruded front teeth that can increase the risk of trauma, and even cause increased social anxiety.

Jaw growth problems and severe bite problems are also often treated at this age since the orthodontist can take advantage of the child’s future growth to correct the problem. A “first phase” of orthodontic treatment at this age can often prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter or less complicated.

A referral from your general dentist is not necessary for an orthodontist and finding the doctor that best suits your family is important. Asking your dentist is a good place to start, and people routinely use Facebook to ask their friends who they recommend.

Social media can often give you an insight into the personality of the practice before you even make the first phone call. Online reviews are a great way to help you narrow your search as well. Google reviews, Facebook, and Yelp will provide trusted sources for reviews.

Insurance companies like to dictate where you get treatment, but most orthodontists can file and collect your insurance benefit even if they are not in-network with your plan. Ultimately, your child’s treatment result and experience will depend on the skill level of the doctor and the team, so it is important to do your research when selecting the best practice for your child.
