MANSFIELD — Richland Area Newhope will host two events this month to shine a light on those with disabilities.

On March 16, ‘The agency will hold it’s 16th annual Community Awareness Day. Eight days later it will host the 7th annual Bringing the Elements Together Art and Talent Show on March 24.

Both events will circulate equal treatment for those with disabilities and are designed to show the community those with impairments are regular people.

The annual Community Awareness day will have a disability simulation where participants will be able to understand what life is like for the impaired.

The participants in the simulation will be given a designated disability and challenges ranging from doing a job, going bowling or opening a door.

“We want people to see people with disabilities have abilities,” said Jane Imbody, Richland Newhope’s director of community relations. “Those with impairments can be successful with challenges, but it may just take longer. We shouldn’t over look them just because they are in a wheelchair.”

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be at Richland Newhope Industries INC., 150 East Fourth Street.

The Art and Talent Show will feature artwork, craft projects and performances by individuals supported through Richland Newhope.

The show will take place at the Richland Mall Center Court, in front of Macy’s.

The talent show currently has eight acts consisting of dancers, singers and instrumentalists. All acts are supported by Richland Newhope.

There will also be artists from Element of Art giving free portrait-drawings and other arts and crafts on display.

“Again, we want to show people with disabilities are just like you and me,” Imbody said. “They may not be as good of a singer as others, but they have a same love of music. It’s a chance to showcase their creative side and for the community to see them as a person.”
