Clifford W. Hammer, 83, of Mansfield, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 8, 2017, at Winchester Terrace Nursing Home.
He was born Sept. 1, 1933, in Mansfield, Ohio, one of seven children of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Fetter) Hammer.
Cliff was a veteran of the U.S. Army and played basketball while he was enlisted. He remained a proud veteran and was a member of Amvets Post #26. He retired from the finance office at General Motors after 30 years. He was a huge football fan and faithfully cheered on the OSU Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved to golf.
Known affectionately as the “Godfather of the family,” Cliff was rock steady in his support of those he loved. A bit grumpy, and maybe opinionated, everyone was certain he would do anything to help them out. It may come at the cost of some unsolicited advice, but was always delivered with your best interests at heart. Cliff was a fan of old movies and enjoyed listening to jazz and blues music.
He is survived by a daughter, Stacey (Walter) Faggart; a son, Clifford Hammer; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Korn Hammer; four brothers; and two sisters.
There will be no services or visitation at this time. Contributions in memory of Cliff may be made to Mansfield Senior High Athletic Department. The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family.
