GALION – For the first time in school history, two Galion High School student-athletes will compete at the New Balance National Indoor Track Championships at The Armory in New York March 10 to 12.

Junior Marisa Gwinner, won the Division 2/3 state title in the high jump at the Ohio Association of Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches state indoor championship. She narrowly missed breaking the state meet record on her final jump.

“Since Marisa started competing, she’s been a special talent,” said Tigers head track coach Todd Roston. “She will compete on the Championship level of the national meet, and I can’t wait to see how she jumps against the best from around the country.”

Briana Streib finished 10th in the state indoor meet. A prior qualifying throw allowed her to the enter the national competition this weekend.

“Since Middle School, Briana has dominated in the shot put and discus competitions,” Roston said. “Her qualification in the Emerging level of the national meet is a testament to her hard work and dedication to her craft.”

In addition to Gwinner’s championship performance, two other Tigers placed at the state indoor meet.

Kerrigan Myers finished in seventh place in the high jump, and Colin McCullough finished sixth in the 60 meter hurdles and seventh in the 400-yard dash.

“I want to congratulate Marisa and Briana on this outstanding achievement,” said Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “Competing in a state competition is no small feat, but going to the national stage will be an even bigger challenge and I have no doubt that both student-athletes will represent Galion very well.”
