Cathy McCumiskey was a strong and sassy woman who looked chaos in the eye – and winked! Her inviting personality as the matriarch, the peacemaker, the very rock of her family exuded kindness and love.
Cathy passed into the Lord’s presence Friday morning Aug. 5, 2016 in her Lexington home, surrounded by family. She was 70.
Born Catherine Teresa Ryan October 8, 1945 in Dublin, Ireland to Edmond and Elizabeth (Clancy) Ryan, she was graduated from Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn, NY.
On Jan. 29, 1966 she married William F. McCumiskey, and Cathy focused on raising their growing family.
Proud of her Irish heritage, Cathy could be opinionated, and at times stubborn. Her loyalty was uncompromising: she was passionate of the Cleveland Browns even after she’d exclaim “those dumb *@#$%*!” She was a fan of all Cleveland Sports and OSU football, but none took the place of her family’s sports events. Cathy played and watched tennis, enjoyed reading and traveling (favored cruises), and loved family trips to Hilton Head.
Cathy volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels, the OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital Auxiliary, and served as a Girl Scouts leader for many years.
Remembered as quiet, loving and passionate, she is survived by her husband of 50 years William “Bill” McCumiskey; their children Terry (Fritz) Griebling, of Lexington, Katie (Scott) Orlando, of Kent, and Willy (Gina) McCumiskey, of Mansfield; grandchildren Alex Griebling and Liam McCumiskey; granddog Golden Retriever Swoosh; sisters Patricia Brereton in NJ and Elizabeth Cowden in CO and a brother Sean Ryan in Florida.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Rosaleen Bergner.
The McCumiskey family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 8, 2016 from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where a Christian Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in Resurrection Parish, 2600 Lexington Avenue with Father Nelson Beaver officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to OhioHealth Hospice may be made at the funeral home.
