SHELBY – The Shelby Country Club hopes to invite more patrons to dinner with a complete redesign and renaming of the club’s restaurant.

What was simply the restaurant at the Shelby Country Club has been renamed as the 1928 Grille, a name chosen by club members to pay homage to the year the club was founded. The new name will pair well with a remodeled space at the entrance of the clubhouse.

“We’re currently trying to utilize an underutilized room,” said clubhouse manager Stefanie Beahr. “The room was closed off for small private parties, but they were few and far between. So we thought we would open it up, refresh it a little and make it an actual bar that anybody could visit.”

According to marketing manager Chelsea Arndt, when guests previously entered the clubhouse they were met with a winding, dark hallway leading to the restaurant. Now, the space has been converted to a small dining area with a full bar.

“It’ll be a different, inviting space where people can hang out separate from the dining,” Arndt said. “Anyone can stop by for drinks and happy hour, and have some good food.”

Shelby Country Club Renovations

Though the clubhouse restaurant has a different name, Beahr assured the same good food would be served. The 1928 Grille features lighter fare including soups, salads and sandwiches, as well as entrees like pasta, pizza and steak or seafood dinners. The menu changes twice a year, winter and summer.

Clubhouse renovations began on March 21 and are expected to wrap up this month. An official ribbon cutting for the 1928 Grille is planned for June 3.

“We figured we’d give it some time, spruce things up a little more, then do it when it’s nice and warm,” Arndt said. “That will be our first Friday event at the pavilion with live music, so come for the ribbon cutting and stay for the band.”

Every Friday night from June to September, the Shelby Country Club features live entertainment starting at 7 p.m. in the club’s outdoor pavilion. Arndt highlighted the club’s picturesque pond and sweeping green landscape as the perfect place to spend a summer evening.

“You don’t realize how beautiful it is until you’re out here,” she said. “Anywhere else you’re stuck in cement.”

Even with a new space and a new restaurant name, Beahr said the country club’s biggest challenge is exposure. The Shelby Country Club is not a closed club, and public activity is welcome at the restaurant and new bar area.

“We’re just trying to get it out there that we’re here, even people in Shelby don’t realize it,” Beahr said. “When they come out they’re amazed, but they have to get here to see it.”

The 1928 Grille is open through renovations. Hours are from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with regular menu offerings from 2 to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
